GPS Playback

Follow

The GPS Playback product allows you to easily replay any moment in time to reveal historical schedule adherence, speeds, vehicle positions, and how service was operated in real-world conditions (including detours and other service changes).

The Basics

GPS Playback reflects how service was actually delivered on the road. When routes deviate from their scheduled path, vehicles are shown following their detour paths when created, and stop-level impacts such as temporary or closed stops are represented accordingly. This helps provide a complete and accurate view of service during disruptions.

Overview: Select a route, vehicle, run, operator or block from the search box, select a date, and specify a time range. Once the replay is generated, you can toggle the playhead at the bottom using your mouse or the play button.

Tip:
- Tap or hold the left/right keys on your keyboard to move forward or backward in the playback.
- Tap the space bar to start the replay.

Search: Start typing and get results for any item that we have integrated, such as vehicle ID, block ID, run ID, or operator ID. More relevant results are placed at the top.

Filtering the search for specific datasets is also available in the "Filter by Data Type" option in the search bar.

A user can select one type or multiple types. Once a user selects a type, the selected types turn blue and move to the top. Results are displayed only for the selected types.

The default search includes all data types.

Headway Status Color: For routes that are managed on a headway basis, you may want to change the color to view headway status instead.

GPS Playback supports custom headway definitions, allowing agencies to perform historical investigations using customized headway rules.

Play button: Use the ▶️ button at the bottom of the GPS Playback screen (left of the timeline) to auto-play vehicle movements without having to click-and-drag the timeline playhead. Click the "1x" to increase the play speed (button will update to 2x speed).

Vehicle and Stop Details: Click on any vehicle to get details like the Vehicle ID, trip information, on-time performance, and more!

Service changes visibility: Playback reflects real-world operations, including detours and stop-level changes, allowing you to understand how service deviated from the scheduled path.

GPS Playback by Vehicle, Block, Operator*, or Run*: Use the search box to generate a GPS playback for a specific vehicle or block.

*For agencies that have such information integrated into the dashboard, GPS Playbacks can also be generated by Operator ID or Run ID.

GPS Pings: Turning this on will allow you to view all GPS reported positions as small dots on the map. Unassigned vehicle locations will be displayed in grey. You can even click on each GPS dot to see its exact latitude and longitude, its speed at that moment in time (if provided by the hardware source), and other information about the vehicle.

Tip: This is a great tool for identifying gaps in GPS signals; a lack of GPS dots in a particular region may indicate that trackers were not reporting their location.
