NTD Reporting with Swiftly

Follow

Swiftly's Download Center includes an NTD Reports tab that generates pre-filled S-10, MR-20, and RR-20 reports directly from your AVL and ridership data — no more pulling raw datasets and building your own spreadsheet formulas.

This isn't a fully automated filing tool: Swiftly doesn't submit anything to the National Transit Database on your behalf. Instead, it calculates the fields it has data for, shows you exactly which fields those are, and lets you download a pre-formatted report that you can copy into the NTD reporting portal alongside the fields Swiftly can't provide (like financial data).

What Swiftly can calculate

MetricReport(s)Data sourceNotesMethodology
Vehicle Revenue MilesS-10, MR-20, RR-20AVLRequires the On Time Performance moduleMiles actually driven in revenue service, from each trip's first stop to its last. Swiftly adds up the distance between the stops each vehicle was seen serving, following the route's GTFS stop path. Deadhead (pull-outs, pull-ins, and travel between blocks) is excluded. Stops where Swiftly received no vehicle data aren't estimated or filled in, so the report shows Percent Missing Stops to flag service that may be undercounted.
Scheduled Vehicle Revenue MilesS-10GTFSRequires the On Time Performance moduleRevenue miles your schedule planned to run in the reporting period, taken from the trip distances in your published GTFS.
Unlinked Passenger TripsMR-20, RR-20APCRequires the Swiftly Ridership moduleTotal boardings counted by your APC on revenue trips. When a trip Swiftly knows ran is missing APC counts, it's filled in using Swiftly Ridership's standard expansion.
Passenger Miles TraveledMR-20, RR-20APCRequires the Swiftly Ridership moduleTotal distance traveled by all passengers. For each stop-to-stop segment, Swiftly multiplies the APC-derived passenger load on board by the segment's distance, then adds up every segment of every revenue trip in the period.

Swiftly doesn't currently provide: Vehicle Revenue Hours, Deadhead Miles and Hours, or Actual Vehicle Miles and Hours, Vehicles Operated in Maximum Service (VOMS) on the MR-20, Service Operated fields on the S-10 (days operated, peak periods, service start/end times), financial data on any form, or any of the non-service NTD forms (financial, asset, safety and security, and similar reports) — these fall outside the data Swiftly has access to.

Every report shows a "What Swiftly provides" summary so you can see at a glance which fields will be filled in for you and which ones you'll need to enter yourself.

Generating a report

  1. In the Swiftly dashboard, go to the Download Center and open the NTD Reports tab.
  2. Choose your report type (S-10, MR-20, or RR-20), reporting period, mode of service, and type of service.
  3. Review the preview, which lays out the fields the same way the actual NTD form does, with Swiftly-provided values highlighted.
  4. Download the report and use it as a reference while you complete your submission in the NTD reporting portal.

Setting up NTD reporting

Before your first report, an admin will need to complete a one-time setup in Settings > NTD Settings:

  • Map modes of service to routes. Each of your routes needs to be assigned an NTD mode (motor bus, trolleybus, light rail, and so on).
  • Map type of service to routes. Each route needs to be marked as directly operated or purchased transportation.

If a field shows as unavailable on a report and you believe it shouldn't be, check with your Swiftly account team to confirm all the correct permissions are enabled.

Good to know

  • Reports don't submit automatically. You'll always do a final review and manual entry into the NTD portal — Swiftly doesn't file on your behalf.
  • Data availability depends on what's enabled for your account. If you added ridership tracking partway through a reporting period, older reports may show gaps for the time before it was turned on.
  • Partial-year data. If you're a newer Swiftly customer, a report may only reflect the portion of the year Swiftly has data for — double-check the reporting period before copying numbers over.

Need the raw data instead?

If you'd rather work with the underlying datasets — for example, to build custom calculations beyond what the NTD Reports tab covers — the Missing Trips, Passenger Counts, and Service Metrics datasets are still available in the Download Center and via API.
